Promotion Story

In december, my good senior manager told me he had recommended my name for promotion. Now it was recommendation of one SM out of many I was reporting to. So I wasn’t sure until I see the announcement.

Also I got to know my friends, who are my rock, lets name them A and M, were also recommended. Now these guys have been in the firm before me and they are the ones I go to for everything.

Cut to last friday.

I came home from work and it was 8 pm something. All of my siblings were at home and we were expecting more guests and I got message from A “we didnt get promoted and you did”

I was like what where?

Then I saw our partner had sent screenshot of email announcement of promotions and my name was there.

But my friends’ wasn’t.

Next I had a chain of most confusing reactions.

I was running to tell dad and my siblings. My home was literally full.

I was feeling horrible for my friends. It was unfair to them.

I was also afraid what if our friendship gets hit by this.

I was staring at that screenshot in disbelief.

At one point I needed some space , I went to bathroom and cried. Those were tears of overwhelming joy.

I just have been so confused.

You have to be at one position for at least 1.5 years to qualify for the next one. They promoted me in 10 months. It’s a huge deal.

A few things do justify my faster promotion, i had 2 good job offers and my SM was aware of it. I handled few very difficult clients and difficult situations very professionally.

I have been patient and obedient, haven’t said No to anything yet. And bosses love that.

But doesn’t mean A and M are anything less. I call them my phone-a-friend helpline. And they are genuinely happy for me but really really mad about what happened to them. It was their turn.

I can’t get over the fact that I can’t even celebrate with my friends. Idk how am I going to face them.

  1. Well done!!!

Don’t you worry about the reaction from others. From what I have seen, there can be a few teething problems at first mainly due to bruised egos – there can be little signs that someone is a bit peeved they were not offered the job, sometimes someone might be a bit overeager to point out any mistakes the person who did get the promotion makes. It can be a little awkward to begin with.

But it does settle. People get over themselves and eventually knuckle down. You may find that the people who did not get the job are looking out for other opportunities though, and that is absolutely fine, they have every right to be interested in progressing their career. So, it’s good to be sensitive to their potentially bruised ego (or perhaps just feelings of embarrassment) and fid little ways to praise them for their work and be supportive.

      1. Your patience will be a valuable. It’s often just childish feelings behind cold reactions to a colleague’s promotion…let them cool off.

Kindness and humility go a long way to resolving awkward atmospheres in the office.

  2. Congratulations!
It really shouldn’t affect your friendship because it wasn’t your decision. You were in the same position they were. You were just the one chosen. So if they were upset, I doubt it’s at you, personally. It’s more about the Management.

    1. actually they joined before me. i can totally justify my promotion as i had way more projects than them and i had far less supervision. it’s just feeling bad because they are my friends. it’s definitely the management and they know that too.
