My Abyss – Poetry

They say
When you gaze into an abyss
For long
It starts gazing into you
But I didn’t tell them
I know this gazing contest
I know my abyss
Like I know my skin
Every night
When the world
Plunges into silence
My abyss visits me
Like a dark angel
Dark and hollow
We stare at each other
For another eternity
Eyes are met
Tears are shed
And darkness is fed
To the darkness itself
Drop by drop
Before dawn
It flies back
Not to another valley
Not to another world
To its home
My heart
Pumping black ink
Not a ruby red fluid
That’s how it is
When you know
You are too dark for the world
To light for yourself
You take out the poison
From your veins
Every night
When the world
Plunges into silence
And inject it back.

Inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche Quote

“He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster. And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.”

  1. I really liked the simplicity here. It’s often in art that we can lose ourselves in a sea of ‘other things’ besides what we originally set out to communicate.

  2. I don’t know who need to hear this but practice your Love languages on yourself.

Gifts:- I buy myself fresh flowers every week or buy yourself something you’ve always wanted.

Physical touch:- Love your body and take your time moisturizing your skin every morning.

Quality Time:- Take yourself out on a date. Pull out a journal and write a letter to your younger or future self. Meditate or do yoga.

Acts of Service:- Give yourself a break and do something nice for yourself or clean your room/get organized.

Words of Affirmation:- Say nice things to yourself like, “I am proud of you.” “You are doing your best.” “You are so beautiful.”

In other words don’t wait for someone else to offer you the love you want and deserve. Start being intentional and actionable about how you love yourself. It makes all the difference.
