Scarface (1983 film)

I have been spotting references of this movie a lot recently. Reading the signs I dedicated my 2 hours to #Scarface and realized this wasn’t the first time I saw this story line, so most probably a lot of movies have been inspired by it.

The movie itself is remake of 1932 film with the same name.

Scarface tells story of a Cuban refugee who arrives in 1980 Miami with nothing and his hunger for wealth leads him to to become a powerful drug lord.

In This Country, You Gotta Make The Money First. Then When You Get The Money, You Get The Power. Then When You Get The Power, Then You Get The Women. – Tony Montana

Original story itself had bit and pieces from real life events. That chainsaw scene?? That has happened for real!!

I muted my laptop and tilted my screen for few minutes, the moment chainsaw came into the frame.

Even though movie plot wasn’t a surprise, I don’t regret watching it because of Al Pacino’s acting.

Just watch it for him if you haven’t already.

He carried the character like he was born with it. Like it was his life and he was Tony Montana.

From the way he sat, walked, talked, reacted, fired, snorted drugs, even if he was looking at something or just nodding, he was breathing the character.

His life goes simply from nothing to fame to doom.

It’s not details of the movie that made me write this post. It’s something my friend said to me long ago when I was telling her about my friends and their life achievements, career, travels, and everything going great for them… it was a lengthy self-loathing session.

She said, “maybe what’s making them happy, wouldn’t be able to make you happy”

I never forgot that…

Scarface particularly reminded me of her words.

Tony Montana was jumping the ladder too fast. Breaking all the rules. His greed was out of control and apparently he was winning.

But he wasn’t truly winning at anything. He got whatever he eyed and dreamt of but he ended up destroying it.

You can take all somebody had and it still might not make you happy.

Those rewards failed to please him and he failed to do justice to them.

And it also shows being an asshole within assholes will pull you into deeper shithole. Even the dirtiest business need some integrity. You lose focus you lose everything.

Oh, btw #MichellePfiffer was painfully beautiful in this movie, she was perfect and you could feel her pain in her silence. Amazing!

Sharing some quotes from the movie:

Lesson Number One: Don’t Underestimate The Other Guy’s Greed! – Frank Lopez

Lesson Number Two: Don’t Get High On Your Own Supply.” – Elvira Hancock

You wanna waste my time? Okay. I call my lawyer. He’s the best lawyer in Miami. He’s such a good lawyer, that by tomorrow morning, you gonna be working in Alaska. So dress warm.” – Tony Montana

Say hello to my little friend! – Tony Montana

Who put this thing together? Me, that’s who! Who do I trust? Me!” – Tony Montana

What you lookin’ at? You all a bunch of fuckin’ assholes. You know why? You don’t have the guts to be what you wanna be? You need people like me. You need people like me so you can point your fuckin’ fingers and say, “That’s the bad guy.” So… what that make you? Good? You’re not good. You just know how to hide, how to lie. Me, I don’t have that problem. Me, I always tell the truth. Even when I lie. So say good night to the bad guy! Come on. The last time you gonna see a bad guy like this again, let me tell you. Come on. Make way for the bad guy. There’s a bad guy comin’ through! Better get outta his way!” – Tony Montana

  1. What! I heard a reference to this movie like an hour ago in a TV series I am watching. Hahahaha – I guess they are everywhere. Excellent film – but agreed about the chainsaw scene. Yikes. “Scary ‘cos it’s true”
