Latest Art Obsession

I never got a chance to formally study arts so I keep venturing into this beautiful planet in whatever way I can.

If I get a chance I read about different art forms and youtube have tons of informative videos about art movement of different times and the artists and famous art works belonging to them.

So, even if I am doing something else I just play any such video. Sometimes I don’t even get time to watch it but hearing retains information too.

So, just recently I came across works of Edgar Degas.

Ever scene those beautiful almost irredescent ballerinas??

yea..

Those are the words of Edgar Degas.

Let me share a little intro from wikipedia;

Edgar Degas born Hilaire-Germain-Edgar De Gas, 19 July 1834 – 27 September 1917) was a French artist famous for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings.

He is especially identified with the subject of dance; more than half of his works depict dancers.[1]

He is regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism, although he rejected the term, preferring to be called a realist.[2] He was a superb draftsman, and particularly masterly in depicting movement, as can be seen in his rendition of dancers, racecourse subjects and female nudes. His portraits are notable for their psychological complexity and for their portrayal of human isolation.[3]

At the beginning of his career, Degas wanted to be a history painter, a calling for which he was well prepared by his rigorous academic training and close study of classic art. In his early thirties, he changed course, and by bringing the traditional methods of a history painter to bear on contemporary subject matter, he became a classical painter of modern life.[4]

It wasn’t hard to get sucked into the world of these glowing ballerinas instantly.

Even though I was never madly in love with impressionism before (maybe I am still not), because of the difference is strokes, that glowing effect I can’t stop obsessing over, and the idea of movement and realism in this art form have manage to keep me hooked to it since days.

So I took the dare of trying my hands on it with soft pastels..

How is it guys?? Feel free to criticize please, I keep saying that. It has been helping me tremendously trust me.

Will close this post with a quote

Only when he no longer knows what he is doing does the painter do good things.

– Edgar Degas

    1. I like Monet alot especially his haystack series and lilies painting… But I know I don’t have patience to try it. I find short strokes intimidating. Now maybe I will.

Yea there are so many. I am going one movement at a time 🙂

      1. I don’t rush at all in any form of creative work. Today I was organising my art supplies (and failed) but I managed to cut random small cards for practice.

  1. Lovely! Drawing with chalk is a challenge, but does provide the ability to layer – you did a nice job with layering technique! Way to try something new!
